A day in Compiègne

31 Jul 2012 - Museums - Galleries

Compiègne is a true imperial city (one hour from Paris by car or train from Gare du Nord) worth a visit. Its castle has hosted both emperors Napoleon :  Napoleon 1rst for his second wedding with Marie-Louise and Napoleon III. It is completely furnished and has a museum dedicated to the Second Empire (very nice but difficult to see because rarely open. Check before going) where we can see the famous painting by Winterhalter ” The Empress Eugénie and her ladies in waiting”. The castle park is classified “Remarkable garden”. This is a real delight both for flower beds and sculptures in antique style. It extends to infinity in the forest of Compiègne, one of the largest in Europe. A tea room has just opened in the rose garden (Le salon de thé du Jardin des Roses, Phone : 03 44 75 69 17) to enjoy the artistic design while savoring a tea or a savory pie. www.musee-chateau-compiegne.fr

The well preserved historic city center has kept its charm of the XVIII th and XIX th centuries. Very pleasant to amble, visit the churches and museums, or for a gastronomic pause. www.compiegne-tourisme.fr
